Abstract

The plant Abutilon indicum commonly known as Atibala, Tutti and Mallow belongs to the family Malvaceae. The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of India and Ceylon. All the parts (Leaves, stems, roots, fruits, flowers and seeds) of the plant possess wide medicinal applications. The pharmacological activities of Abutilon indicum have been reported are antibacterial activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-oxidant activity, hepatoprotective activity, nephroprotective activity, wound healing activity, antivenom activity, anticancer activity, antiarthritic activity, anti-Alzheimer’s activity, hypoglycaemic activity, antiulcer activity, aphrodisiac activity, anti-diarrhoeal activity, anticonvulsant activity, analgesic and sedative activity, diuretic activity, antimycotic activity, larvicidal activity and antidiabetic activity. Besides, The Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India indicates the use of root in gout, polyuria and haemorrhagic diseases. Also in Ayurveda, the milk of the plant used to cure urinary discharges. In Unani, the plant is used for chest troubles, piles and bronchitis. Various important phytoconstituents such as vanillin, beta sitosterol, methyl coumarate, aurantiamide acetate, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, sesquiterpene lactones have also been reported from the plant. The present review highlights the evidence-based overview on the plant, its phytochemistry and pharmacological properties.
