Abstract

Research on storage insects became firmly established in this country about 1894 by F. H. Chittenden, working in the Bureau of Entomology, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Subsequent Federal leaders in the field have been E. A. Back, Randall Latta, and Lyman S. Henderson. Most rapid progress in a continuing search for better fumigants was made by R. T. Cotton and R. C. Roark between 1925 and 1930. For an interval of 18 years, from 1934 through 1951, work on stored-products insects was distributed among other division of the Bureau. The parts played by entomologist in the various States, by systematists, by workers with commercial companies, and by the Food and Drug Administration are discussed. Stored-products insects research in other countries is outlined and special mention Is made of the leadership being shown by entomologists in Canada, England, India, and Japan.
