Abstract
At the R.O.C. National Development Seminar in 1985, the author was invited to speak on the topic, “Medical Education in R.O.C. 1984─1985”.The manuscript was published in the Kaohsiung Jourmal of Medical Sciences in August 1985. The same author at the Intemational Symposium on Health Science Education in February 1987, gave a talk on an outline of the current status of the R.O.C.’s health science education. The paper provided a general description of eight medical colleges, their educational programs, student enrollment, faculty, faculty-student ratio, tuition and fees, accreditation of teaching hospitals, and some other aspects of medical education in the Republic of China in the academic year 1986─1987. The eight medical colleges have established 48 undergraduate schools. Six of the eight medical colleges have established 37 graduate institutes and offer 34 courses toward the master of science degree and 12 courses toward the doctor of philosophy. To meet the needs of the country, the eight colleges, in addition to Schools of Medicine, have established Schools of Dentistry, Schools of Pharmacy, Schools of Nursing, Schools of Medical Technology (or School of Technology for Medical Sciences), Schools of Public Health, Schools of Rehabilitation Medicine, School of Chinese Medicine, School of Nutrition, and School of Nutrition and Health. The Schools of Medicine in four medical colleges offer two undergraduate programs: a seven-year curriculum admitting senior high School graduates and a five-year curriculum admitting college graduates.
