Abstract
An explosive outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting in a migrant hostel was described. The disease was of mild to moderate severity, necessitating the admission to hospital of one of the children. The outbreak was chiefly of interest in that the families involved were found to be excreting a variety of pathogenic micro-organisms, namely, <i>S. typhimurium</i>, <i>Sh. sonnei</i>, and ECHO virus types 11, 14, 30 and an un-typed strein. The affected families had entered the hostel from different ships within two mth. of each other. The significance of the microbiological findings was discussed in relation to the explosive nature of the outbreak and to ECHO virus isolations in routine diagnostic virology in Western Australia.
