Abstract

Power system analysis on a large scale system is computationally expensive. Nowadays, due to the transmission and generation expansion and the rise of the renewable resources, the system is becoming larger and denser. Consequently, the burden of the computation is prohibitive. Network equivalence is a technique which can replace the original large and complicated system model by a small and simplified equivalent model. Ward reduction is commonly used by researchers. However, the traditional Ward reduction is not capable to satisfy different study objectives. More critically, the external generator splitting problem limits its use of solving dc OPF problem. In order to improve the flexibility of Ward reduction, this paper proposed a combined optimization based network reduction method which can generate a reduced network model by solving an optimization problem and place the external generators in a robust and accurate way.
