Abstract

A methodology for determining reservoir operating rules in a multi-reservoir water system using a linear programming model is presented. The methodology includes optimisation and simulation tools within an implicit stochastic optimisation framework. It aims to support water decisions in a participatory and integrated risk management approach to drought events by selecting and evaluating reservoir operating rules based on hydrological scenarios. A test case widely used in the literature is investigated to evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology. Plausible results are obtained, encouraging the possibility of applying linear programming in identifying reservoir rules, particularly under drought conditions.
