Abstract

The present study discusses an optimal backup policy for a hard computer disk used for a personal computer or an engineering work station. The information stored in the hard disk is backed up at age T, where age refers to the elapsed time since the previous backup operation or the recovery from a hard disk failure, whichever occurred most recently. The existence of an optimal backup time that maximizes the availability is examined. A numerical example is also presented to illustrate the proposed backup policy.
