Abstract

The influence region of a coated fiber embedded in a cylindrical member subject to uniform lateral pressure is studied. An analysis is given based on the consideration that the relative error is less than 1%. The analytical results are then generalized to non-circular cross-sectioned solid structural members. Thus the problem of an optical fiber sensor system embedded in a non-circular cross-sectioned member subject to combined loads including lateral pressure can be solved. As an example, transfer equations for monitoring the combined loads of axial tensile force and uniform lateral pressure on a rectangular cross-sectioned member with two embedded coated fibers are established. The issue of ensuring system sensitivity is also discussed.
