Abstract

Summary form only given. A standing-wave optical dipole trap is loaded with a single atom or any desired number of atoms. By controlling the motion of the standing wave we transport the atom with submicrometer precision over macroscopic distances. The displaced atom is observed by position-sensitive fluorescence detection in the dipole trap. We successfully transport one atom over the maximum distance of 1.5 cm.
