Abstract

OETTLE1 notes that under certain conditions of oblique illumination objects with refractive index only slightly greater than that of the surrounding medium show an appearance “bright on one side but dark on the other”. He does not consider the possibility of unintentional oblique illumination with phase contrast; it is this which has been studied in the present experiments.
