Abstract

An appraisal of the various known operative methods for removal of tumors in the pineal area is made and an additional operative technique described. This method allows a direct approach to this anatomical region by retracting the occipital lobe and without sacrifice of cerebral tissue. Ventricular drainage during surgery and the sitting position facilitate the exposure and enable easy viewing for the surgeon and the assistant. This procedure also allows dural openings on both sides of the falx and below the transverse sinus if necessary. The operative procedure can be converted into a ventriculo-cisternostomy if no relief of the CSF obstruction can be accomplished.
