Abstract
Speech, language and communication (SLC) skills are a critical factor in a child's development and in predicting children's wellbeing outcomes and later life chances. There are links between social disadvantage and SLC needs. This article provides an overview of SLC and describes the development of an online resource entitled Speech, language and communication: Giving children the best possible start in life. The tool aims to support health visitors and other early years workers to assess SLC development, and empower parents to facilitate it in their children.
