Abstract

Increase in Internet of Things (IoT) applications rise the demand for more wireless connectivity. One of the promising solutions is to utilize the unused licensed Television White Spaces (TVWS) spectrum. In this paper, we consider energy harvesting cognitive radio wireless network operators (ECTNOs) which use TV white spaces (TVWS) for wireless connectivity. These network operators harvest RF energy and use it for transmission purpose. Spectrum leasing is considered essential to support wide range of IoT applications. We have considered two types of spectrum availability: free TVWS and High Priority Channels (HPCs) of TVWS to be taken on lease. We propose an online algorithm for energy harvesting cognitive radio IoT network to optimize the cost with respect to data quality and transmission delay. There is trade-off between total system cost and these QoS parameters. The performance of the proposed energy harvesting online algorithm is seen to be consistent with the optimal algorithm in non energy harvesting case.
