Abstract

The author emphasizes the shift in focus of reference services in the U.S. She states the conversion of some science and engineering branch libraries into a single service point where library assistants work in circulation and answer reference questions. She mentions that some libraries are finding more contact with students because of greater involvement in classes and academic events. Also noted is a study by M.S. Bracke et al on the need for subject librarians to perform new work rather than broaden their former duties.
