Abstract

To the Editor: Although most institutions have protocols to ensure skin biopsy specimens are immediately placed in formalin to process for hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) staining, occasional errors result in biopsy tissue sitting unpreserved for variable amounts of time. In such instances, clinicians must decide whether it is cost effective and medically valuable to place the tissue in formalin and process it for diagnostic evaluation or to discard the tissue and repeat the biopsy if possible.
