Abstract

AbstractDrag reduction pipe flow experiments using random coiling polymers have been dominated by the small scales of turbulence. An experiment is reported using polyelectrolytes DNA and collagen, which have extended conformations in solution that shows a relationship between the large scales and drag reduction. Turbulent or molecular interactions can explain the observed increase in drag reduction with an increase in pipe diameter.
