Abstract
Let S = Γ ∖ X + be a connected component of a Shimura variety and let π : X + ⟶ S be the uniformizing map. We show that an algebraic subvariety V of S is weakly special if and only if an irreducible analytic component of π - 1 V is definable in an o-minimal structure over R.
