Abstract

Colette Marshall is a consultant vascular surgeon who hastened the downfall of the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS) by cancelling interviews in March. I remember as a teenager watching a programme called MASH on television. They were doing heart surgery, and I thought, “I could do that.” My love for surgery was confirmed when I did my medical house job and realised that medicine definitely wasn't for me. Surgery combines intellectual skill and decision making with new technology and practical skills. I feel I can make an immediate difference to someone's life and get instant feedback to see if my diagnosis is correct when I operate. I was introduced to the shortlisting process of MTAS in January 2007.
