Abstract

The rapid adoption of renewable energy techniques in water pumping systems applications has increased the requirement for suitable design. This has resulted in countless studies in this field, and many designs were presented by several researchers. While some of these studies were focused on the photovoltaic (PV) pumping system structure, others were carried out on the control techniques either for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the PV array or the motor drive systems. In this study, a design of single-stage three-phase induction motor drive for PV supplied water pumping system with MPPT ability is proposed. The scalar V/f control is suggested to control three-phase induction motor speed with a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). The Perturb and Observe (P&O) based MPPT algorithm is designed to track the maximum power point of the PV array under varying solar irradiation conditions. The proposed single-stage PV supplied water pumping system is modeled and tested for varying solar irradiance conditions by using MATLAB/Simulink. The results obtained from the simulation studies are compared with the same simulation model without MPPT algorithm, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is presented.
