Abstract

Isopiestic molalities of {(1 - y)NaHSO4 + y Na2SO4}(aq) have been measured over the temperature range 383.46 K to 498.19 K with NaCl(aq) serving as the reference electrolyte for the calculation of osmotic and activity coefficients. The ion-interaction model, as applied to mixed electrolytes and with consideration of the partial ionization of the hydrogen sulfate anion, gave an excellent description of the experimental results. Only two mixing parameters were required, a binary for hydrogen-sulfate—sulfate, and a ternary for sodium—hydrogen-sulfate—sulfate. With a very simple temperature dependence the model is useful over the temperature range 298 K to 498 K. On the basis of results at T = 298.15 K the model appears to be equally applicable to the acid-rich system {(1 - y)NaHSO4 + y H2SO4}(aq).
