Abstract
An Ising model with isotropic competing interactions is presented as a possible model for binary alloys displaying modulated structural order. In the mean-field approximation we find that this model supports layered commensurate and incommensurate structures as well as phases with modulation in two or more lattice directions. Its behaviour near a “superdegenerate” point, where the zero-temperature entropy per spin is nonvanishing, is also discussed.
