Abstract

It has been demonstrated that the dose descriptors MSAD, Dmax, and w, may be readily determined using a pair of specially designed ionisation chambers. With the additional measurement of the sensitivity profile FWHM, the CTDI and the coefficient of performance eta may also be determined. The results compared well with established techniques employing TLD, and are obtained with much greater convenience, in the CT suite without recourse to TLD reading facilities or a scanning microdensitometer. The overall accuracy of the ionisation of chamber system, including calibration uncertainties, and energy dependence, is estimated to be better than +or-5%. However, for precise assessment of the dose profile shape, the use of film and microdensitometry or TLD is still required.
