Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the corrosion of aluminium matrix composites reinforced with ferrotitanium and silicon carbide. As-cast pure aluminium and aluminium matrix composites were produced by stir casting. A fixed volume of ferrotitanium and varying proportions (0.5, 2, 5, and 7 wt. %) of silicon carbide were used for the fabrication of the composites. Chronopotentiometry and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to study the corrosion behaviour of the fabricated composites. Pits with irregular shapes and sizes were observed on the corroded substrates. There were similarities between the polarization curves of the cast samples in sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions. Composites with silicon carbide reinforcements exhibited better corrosion resistance with lower corrosion potential values.
