Abstract

Experimental orthogonal machining results are given which show that the ratio of the force normal to the cutting direction to the force in this direction increases with decrease in undeformed chip thickness as well as with increase in negative rake angle. While the influence of rake angle is well known and relatively easy to explain it appears that the influence of undeformed chip thickness is less well known and so far lacks a satisfactory explanation. The purpose of this paper is to explain this effect in terms of the mechanics of the process.
