Abstract

The synthesis of β-galactosidase by a particulate fraction prepared by digitonin lysis of penicillin spheroplasts of Escherichia coli has been examined. The preparation was found to contain viable cells with osmotic properties similar to those of spheroplasts. The activity of the particulate preparation in forming β-galactosidase is equivalent to the synthetic activity of a spheroplast preparation with an equal viable count under identical induction conditions. Other properties of the particulate preparation could not be distinguished from those of spheroplasts.
