Abstract

Summary: Obstetrical data were reviewed for 100 women of Mediterranean origin with heterozygous beta‐thalassaemia and a baby delivered at 28 weeks or more of gestation, and the results were compared with similar data from a group of non‐thalassaemic Mediterranean women and a group of women of Anglo‐Saxon origin. No increase in fetal wastage during previous pregnancies was found in the thalassaemic group, and fetal weights, placental weights, and period of gestation at delivery were similar in the thalassaemic and non‐thalassaemic Mediterranean women. There was, however, a significant increase in fetal distress and pre‐eclamptic toxaemia in patients with thalassaemia.
