Abstract

An attempt was made to improve the procedures of previous experiments which attempted to bring out the universality of phonetic symbolism in natural languages. It was hypothesized that matching of 22 pairs of antonyms in five foreign languages would occur correctly beyond a chance level (α ≤ 0.05). The results supported the argument of the existence of a positive relation between language structure and cognitive processes, independently of the particular language concerned. The only other condition required was for the stimulus words to be of a sensory nature.
