Abstract

The balanced armature receiver is an electromagnetic transducer, used in hearing aids and high-end hearables. Understanding and predicting the coupling between the electromagnetic behaviour and mechanical motion in a comprehensive fashion is fundamental for our research towards a complete multiphysics description. We present a 3D finite element model (FEM) of the magnetic circuit that captures the effect of fringing and stray fields in the receiver, to accurately predict the force on the armature. We compare this finite element model to lumped parameter models (LEM) representing the electrical and mechanical domains. The simulation results are matched to laser vibrometer and electrical impedance measurements of the device.
