Abstract

A series of experiments were carried out to determine the factors affecting the power requirements of the Wye Double Digger. The variables were: rotor speed, which varied between 94 and 242rev/min; forward speed, which varied between 1·8 and 5·1 km/h; and rotor configuration, that is, using 16 and 24 straight-shank blades and 12 pick tines. The experiments showed that there was an increase in p.t.o. power with an increase in either rotor or forward speed. Draught power increased with forward speed and the total power requirements increased with both an increase in forward and rotor speed. However, the total specific energy requirements (kWh/ha) increased with an increase in rotor speed but fell with an increase in forward speed. The straight shank blades used up to 50% more power than the pick tines.
