Abstract

In this paper we propose an approach to fracture toughness evaluation of surface layers with compositional gradient and we apply it to nitrided layers on steel. Such a test is based on the Vickers indentation technique (Palmqvist’s test). The procedure is applied to case studies including nitrided layers grown onto two types of nitriding steels subjected to gas - and ion - nitriding treatments. Fracture toughness data can be summarized in terms Kla0 « crack-arrest fracture toughness parameter » ; such a parameter is suitable for ranking purposes among different materials, treatments and nitrided layers which display the same surface hardness and/or nitriding depth.
