Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the extent of the noise hazard, measure its effects on the screening test of hearing and consider ways in which its influence could be modified. The research was carried out in three parts. The first aimed at establishing the nature of the ambient noise in schools, both in terms of its frequency characteristics and its intensity. The second considered the effects of representative samples of that noise on the ability of normally hearing subjects to fulfil the requirements of the pure tone screening test. To supplement this work the study also set out to collect data on the practice of screening procedures in England and Wales and to inquire into the noise hazard experienced by other workers. A brief attempt was made to consider possible means by which the problem could be eased. This paper is based on a research project undertaken at the Department of Audiology, Manchester University, as a part of a course leading to a Diploma in Audiology.
