Abstract

To enhance the performance of impedance relays, current based differential schemes are a substitute for the protection transmission line (TL) by which reliability, sensitivity, selectivity and operating time of relay can be improved. However, this algorithm has limited performance due to Line Charging Capacitive Current (LCCC) and Current Transformer (CT) saturation. To overcome these limitations, in this paper, an Inverse of Both Ends Differential Current (IBEDC) based scheme is presented to detect the internal fault and works with only phase elements, does not require sequence elements. To examine the superiority of the presented technique, the simulation tests have been conducted on a 400 kV, 50 Hz, 200 km TL using PSCAD and MATLAB (2021a) software. The simulation results under various operating conditions show the effectiveness of the presented technique, especially under high resistance ground faults.
