Abstract

In 1973, the Stratford Festival named Robin Phillips as its new artistic director. In the months following the announcement, a small number of voices were raised — CTR‘s among them — suggesting that the Festival, Canada’s largest and most prestigious theatre, should not be run by someone without Canadian experience. At the time, many ridiculed those voices arguing that “art is international” and suggesting that such radical sentiments belonged more appropriately to the lunatic fringe.
