Abstract

The origins of the veterinary nurse are unclear but animal nurses may have played a key part in the late 1880s when history records the presence of hospitals devoted to the nursing of dogs. Qualified veterinary nurses are key members of the veterinary team, providing skilled care for sick animals and support for their owners. In order to qualify as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), students choose to follow either a vocational or higher education route. The chapter explains Routes into veterinary nursing; Employment issues for veterinary nurses; and Continuing professional development.
