Abstract

A brief introduction to the geological setting of the Japanese islands with comments on the latest theories about plate-boundaries is followed by an account of the geology seen in an excursion which lasted nearly two weeks. The itinerary included Tokyo and the Kanto Plain, Fuji and Hakone volcanoes, the Izu peninsula, the Shimizu-Shizuoka area of the Tokai region, Kyoto across to Maizuru on the Japan Sea, Nara, Utsonomiya and the Nikko district.
