Abstract

Chemical peels are popular, affordable and relatively safe procedures for use in medical aesthetic clinics and at home. However, in the twenty-first century, the term ‘chemical peel’ has as broad a scope as the term ‘transport’. For example, patients can travel by bicycle (superficial), car (medium) or helicopter (deep). To identify each type of peel, this article will review the most frequently used ingredients, including alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids and phenol. The content of this article will also support aesthetic practitioners in choosing appropriate chemical peels for best clinical response.
