Abstract

Orthopaedic and trauma nursing is a discrete but diverse specialty focused on the care of the patient with musculoskeletal problems. This chapter provides an overview of today's orthopaedic nursing by exploring the essence of orthopaedic care, patient care needs, and the nature and development of orthopaedic nursing as a specific nursing specialty. Orthopaedic nursing has been entwined with the development of orthopaedic and trauma surgery. The theory which underpins orthopaedic nursing practice is based on an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system and of those physical and psychosocial factors which affect musculoskeletal health and wellbeing as well as recovery from injury and surgery. The centrality of mobility in orthopaedic and trauma nursing practice has led to one proposed model for orthopaedic nursing which holds mobility at its core. Practitioners are increasingly required to consider the complex nature of ethical issues which affect the orthopaedic and trauma patient.
