Abstract

Hollow fibers display unique properties, which make them highly attractive in many industrial fields. This chapter introduces the reader to the world of hollow fibers with a brief and general introduction to membranes. Hollow fibers have played a significant role in the field of membranes from the moment of the development of the first module to the present day, in various fields of application. In classical membrane filtration operations, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration, the driving force is represented by a pressure difference across the membrane. Membranes can be classified, on the basis of their structure, in two main general categories: symmetric and asymmetric. Depending on their dimensions, membranes with cylindrical geometry can be distinguished in three main types: tubular membranes, capillary membranes, and hollow fiber membranes. According to recent research conducted by Global Market Insights, the hollow fiber membrane market is expected to reach $6.14 billion in 2025, including different sectors.
