Abstract

Abstract An elementary review of lattice gauge theories is presented in which the concept of local gauge invariance is introduced and the Wegner/Wilson action is “derived” as the simplest possible form for a locally gauge invariant action. The properties of the simple limits of a theory of a “matter field” coupled to a gauge field are derived and discussed. A selection of exact results of importance to lattice gauge theories are reviewed and discussed. Approximate and qualitative results from various sources are also summarized.
