Abstract
ROWELL: When I met you in your office at UNESCO in Paris in March, 1988, we did not talk about you or your work there. We spoke of African literature and Francophone Caribbean writers. I'd like to begin this interview with the kind of cultural work-and it is international in the broadest sense of the word-you do for UNESCO. You promote literature in various languages; you make world literature available to world readers. You get it translated into various languages, and then you promote texts of various literatures.
