Abstract

PurposeThis pilot study initiated a partnership with a university in the United States to develop the undergraduate nursing curriculum at a university in Vietnam. Data was collected online using surveys, focus groups, and semi-structured interviews as preliminary consultation for curriculum review. This study is guided by the Ottawa Model for Nursing Curriculum Renewal, a curriculum merit checklist, and a curriculum mapping tool. Constant comparative analysis including the coding of data was used to analyze the focus group data. Likert scale survey questions were analyzed to produce descriptive statistics. ResultsParticipants identified areas of development for their curriculum including specific specialty course needs. The findings provide an understanding of areas of the curriculum that the partner university would like to develop based on needs of the students, university, and the unique healthcare demands, culture, and socioeconomic factors that contribute to the health of their province. ConclusionsA model of curriculum revision for undergraduate nursing curriculum in Vietnam could be translated in Southeast Asia. The future large-scale funding proposal aims: (1) To implement a revised undergraduate nursing curriculum at the partner university; and (2) To establish a regional training model using the Training of Trainers Model about curriculum revision throughout Vietnam.
