Abstract

Citrus Bacterial Canker (CBC), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac), is a major fruit and foliar disease in citriculture worldwide. This disease, characterized by erumpent lesions on leaves, stems and fruits, is endemic in many areas of South America and Southeast Asia. Economic losses from CBC are the result of the decrease in fresh fruit value, premature abcission of fruit and leaves and those due to regulatory measures designed to halt the spread of the disease (Civerolo, 1984). Because of the importance of Xac as an exotic pathogen in Florida and other areas of the world, the development of efficient methods for diagnosis has been a priority.
