Abstract

We present a new type of solitary wave solution for the higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which governs the propagation of subpicosecond and femtosecond optical pulses in optical fibers under certain parametric conditions. Unlike the previously solitary wave solution, the expression of this novel solution is composed of the product of bright and dark solitary waves, which can describe the propagation of dark optical pulses with finite-width background. The evolution of the solitary wave and its stability under some perturbations are investigated by using the numerical simulation methods.
