Abstract
The phase dependence of the photon momentum vector k and thedirection of an applied electric field E, which is asignature for an atomic T-odd interaction, is investigated for thefirst time using a fibre interferometer. Atomic thallium vapoursits in one arm of the interferometer and is subjected to laserradiation tuned near to the 6p1/2-6p3/2 transition at1281 nm. The results show no evidence of a k · Eeffect down to the level of 0.06±0.1 µrad for a field of10 000 V m-1. This sets a limit on the T-odd admixturecoefficient δT = (±0.9±2)×10-3. Someimportant sources of systematic effects are discussed as well as thefactors which limit the present sensitivity.
