Abstract

An interdisciplinary nutrition support team (NST) was established in 1991 at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, NY, a 600-bed teaching hospital. The team comprises an attending gastroenterologist, a gastroenterology fellow, a certified nutrition support dietitian, a certified nutrition support nurse, and two certified nutrition support pharmacists. As a mandatory consult service of the Department of Medicine, the primary purpose of the NST is to evaluate adult patients being considered for total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Physicians desiring TPN for their patients admitted for a medical service must obtain approval from the NST.
