Abstract

The observations reported herein concern an array of filaments observed in the cytoplasm between basal bodies of cilia. The filaments are disposed in a narrow plane just distal to the basal feet. The possibility that this filamentous apparatus may function in ciliary coordination is discussed. Filaments which extend from the lateral basal bodies to the cell membrane are also described. The possibility that these are related to intercellular ciliary coordination is considered. In addition, the proximal portion of the basal bodies display a morphology not previously described. It consists of a central chamber and a ring of outer chambers, some of which are shown to communicate with the cytoplasmic matrix.
