Abstract
An interface program in Logic Programming (PROLOG) has been developed for a knowledge-based system. It lets the user develop and update farm knowledge input files for FARMSYS, an integrated decision support system for machinery management for multi-crop production systems. The specially designed computer screens allow selecting items from pop-up menus that may be altered by the user. Once data such as tractor name is entered, it need never be typed in again, but will appear on a pop-up menu the next time it is a possible selection for input. PROLOG, an artificial intelligence language, can easily handle rules that facilitate error-checking and logical decisions and searches during the operation of the system. A team of experts that evaluated the system found its design and structure appropriate for its function. It has been successfully used for creating and updating real farm data files for testing and verification of FARMSYS. Though currently structured to collect farm operational information, its basic concepts can be used for a variety of other applications.
