Abstract

Today's intelligent buildings are actually electronically enhanced buildings, the forerunners of a new architecture. They herald an impending paradigm shift in the world of architectural design. This shift will occur, in part, as a response to the need for healthy and sustaining buildings, the opportunities presented by innovations in science and technology, the demands of the new global economy, and the growing realization of the value of human capital by knowledge-based companies. The resulting architecture will be comprised of responsive environmental systems and will mark the emergence of a fully developed intelligent architectural form—the Knowledge Building.
