Abstract

This article proposes an integrative framework to guide those conducting palliative care research with First Nations communities in Canada. We created this framework based on five years’ experience conducting palliative care research with twelve First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario, Canada. The framework consists of five components: community capacity development, cultural competence and safety, participatory action research, ethics, and partnerships. Each component has a well-developed evidence base in the literature; however, integrating them provides a unique contribution. Together, they articulate a research approach that respects the unique needs and cultural mores of First Nations communities. We offer this framework as a resource to guide other researchers and First Nations communities who wish to conduct research to develop palliative care programs.
