Abstract

The Brazilian shipbuilding industry is presently showing significant recovery prospects. However, there are some problems affecting this process. The high level of builder’s risk perceived by the owners and, mainly, by banks, insurance companies and other stakeholders, is likely the most critical. The main instrument to keep the risk in acceptable levels is a strict control of the construction progress. However, some shipowners have been employing control systems that are excessively complex, detailed and expensive, but, at same time, not sufficiently effective. This paper presents the main characteristics of a computer system developed to provide a broad control over the construction progress and financial balance as well as a continuous risk assessment.
